There are many ways of getting to the Yucatan. Driving is one way and we know of a number of winter visitors who take this leisurely approach to getting to Merida and Progreso. Merida has the closest international airport to Progreso (about 40 km -25 miles) and to other sunny locations nearby.

Currently the only way to arrive at Merida driving is the all overland route crossing the US- Mexican border and then traversing Mexico along the Gulf of Mexico or further inland. There have been continuing plans to initiate a passenger and car ferry service from Tampa, Florida to Progreso, Yucatan. The cost and commencement date have not been established but it would certainly save considerable driving time for those coming from Eastern and Central Canada and from the Eastern part of U.S.A. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments.

Air Transportation:

Regularly scheduled airlines provide the most flexibility and availability of flights. Unfortunately these are also generally the most expensive.

Travel Accommodation:

En route accommodation can give the traveler an opportunity to stop-over for short visits to see additional sights or to just relax and sight-see on the way to their destination. As almost all our rentals commence on the first day of the calendar month your arrival must be timed for that date or later. However, early arrivals give you the opportunity to visit Merida after your flight, get to know the surrounding area, local customs, fiesta dates, tours, shopping, dining, etc.

On our many visits we have stayed at 2 hotels both located downtown on the Plaza Hidalgo, one block from the Zocalo (town square and heart of the city). There are many others but we’ve found these to our liking. Their names are:
